Why I keep playing Bach

It’s funny.  I’ve been creating music that doesn’t change keys and has been deconstructed to the degree that the technical demands have often been reduced to one finger on my left hand and a repetitive pattern with three fingers on my right.  So why do I keep returning to a few Bach violins tunes that I first tried to play when I was 18 or so?

I’m not particularity good at them, but I find that they call out to be played every six months or so.  Every time I return to them, I try new fingerings new phrasing and articulating.

In yoga and sitting meditation I often hear people referring to their “practice.” Music has certainly been my “practice” whether I knew it or not.

When I was 18 Bach interjected his spirit into my practice.  What good fortune that he continues to do so.
